Excavation & Demolition in Westfield, Indiana

Westfield is one of the fastest-growing cities in Indiana. It was a Quaker town of 3,300 people in 1990 and counted 64,407 residents in a 2025 special census. That kind of growth is made of dirt work: building pads and curb cuts in the new subdivisions, drainage correction on flat till ground, sewer tie-ins where annexation caught up with rural homes, and teardowns in the core that dates to 1834. Our Arcadia shop is about 11 miles northeast.

About 11 miles southwest of the shop. An easy run down toward US 31.

Know your town

The history under Westfield and why it matters when we dig.

Quakers first, and likely the Underground Railroad

Westfield was founded May 6, 1834, by North Carolina Quakers Asa Bales, Ambrose Osborne, and Simon Moon. It is believed to have been planned as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the Anti-Slavery Friends eventually split from the town's Quaker meeting over the cause. The Union High Academy Historic District, on the National Register since 1995, still anchors the old core.

The county's growth engine

The numbers are hard to believe: 3,304 people in 1990, 9,293 in 2000, 30,068 in 2010, 46,410 in 2020, and a city-run special census that counted 64,407 by September 2025. Housing units jumped from 17,548 to 26,020 in five years. Every one of those units started life as a graded pad with a curb cut, which is why Westfield keeps excavators busy.

Grand Park changed the map

Grand Park Sports Campus opened in 2014, hosted the Big Ten men's soccer tournament in 2016, and carries more than 10 miles of trails plus the largest trailhead on the Monon corridor. Commercial buildout has followed it, with parking lots, retention basins, and utility trenching on the same flat clay those sports fields are drained on.

Westfield Permits

Who issues what inside Westfield limits, and when the county takes over.

Westfield runs its own permitting. Building and demolition permits go through the city's Apply-for-a-Permit hub, driveway and right-of-way (encroachment) permits through Westfield Public Works, and disturbed-ground drainage through the city's Stormwater program, since Westfield operates its own MS4. Septic is the Hamilton County Health Department's program, which in Westfield mostly means the annexation frontier: rural homes on older systems that are now inside city limits, often tying into sewer when they remodel or sell. We handle the filings on most jobs.

Westfield FAQs

We bought a new-construction lot. Can you do the pad, driveway, and drainage as one project?+

Yes, and it is cheaper and better as one project. The pad, the drive apron, and the grading plan all interact. One contract means one mobilization and nobody pointing fingers between contractors. We pull the building-side and Public Works permits together and stage the work in the right order.

Our yard in a newer subdivision holds water every spring. Is that normal?+

Common, but not normal. Westfield's subdivisions sit on flat, dense clay till, and production-builder grading often leaves swales too shallow or backyards pitched the wrong way. The fix is usually regrading, buried downspout lines, and drain tile to a legal outlet. Because Westfield runs its own MS4, larger fixes get a stormwater review, which we handle.

Our house predates the subdivisions and still has a septic tank. What happens when we tie into city sewer?+

The old system has to be properly abandoned. That means pumped, then the tank crushed or filled so it can't collapse under someone's future patio. We excavate the sewer lateral and handle the abandonment in one visit. If sewer hasn't reached you yet, replacement systems still permit through the Hamilton County Health Department.

What permits does a demolition need in Westfield?+

A city demolition permit through Westfield's permit hub and utility disconnects. If the structure sits near the old core, expect a little extra care, since this town dates to 1834 and older lots hide wells, cisterns, and forgotten foundations. We pull the permits and coordinate the disconnects on most jobs.
