When the Peru & Indianapolis Railroad surveyed through in 1849, landowners John Shaffer and Daniel Waltz donated the ground the town was founded on. Tradition says it was to be named 'Shaltz' in their combined honor — mercifully, the decision went to Judge Jeremiah Smith, who chose Arcadia after the ancient region of Greece instead.
The town literally started as a drainage project
The original townsite was low, marshy, and heavily wooded. Before Arcadia could be a town, the woods were cleared and the ground was drained by two large open ditches spanned by log bridges. A hundred and seventy-five years later we're still managing water on the same flat clay — drainage is the first conversation on most Arcadia jobs, same as it was in 1850.
A gas-boom glass town
During Indiana's natural gas boom, the American Glass Company moved its operations here from Ohio in 1894 — running on gas the town donated — and the Flint House Glass Company turned out lamp chimneys.
