Excavation & Demolition in Summitville, Indiana
Summitville is the high ground of northeastern Madison County, laid out in 1867 and named for its relatively lofty elevation, about 29 road miles northeast of our Arcadia shop. Just over half a square mile holds about a thousand people, and the town has no building or demolition permit office of its own, so most paperwork here runs through Madison County offices we already work with every week. The jobs are practical ones: septic replacements, ditch and culvert work, driveways, and the occasional teardown.
About 29 road miles northeast of the shop, six miles north of Alexandria.

The services this town actually calls for, and the local reason why.
Know your town
The history under Summitville and why it matters when we dig.
Named for the high ground
The town was laid out in 1867 and took its name from its relatively lofty elevation. High ground is a decent start for drainage, but the name does not grade your lot. Mud Creek rises just west of town and runs south to meet Pipe Creek at Alexandria, so Summitville sits at the top of a watershed, and the water leaving town has to cross somebody's ground to get out. Ours is the phone that rings when it crosses yours.
Headwaters country
The ditches around Summitville are headwater ditches, and a dry ditch is easy to underestimate. Mud Creek's start west of town is the main example, and the farm ditches that feed it follow the same pattern. We grade and site around where the water goes when the ditches are carrying it, because the dry view is the wrong one to design from.
Small, steady, and a little historic
Summitville counted 967 people in 2010, 989 in 2020, and the 2024 estimate is 1,004, modest growth across both stretches, which is more than many towns its size can say. The Joseph and Lucinda Thawley House made the National Register in 2009, a reminder that small towns carry old buildings worth care. Work near a listed property gets screened before we price it, not after.
Summitville Permits
Who issues what inside Summitville limits, and when the county takes over.
Summitville keeps town permitting light. There is no town building or demolition permit office, so construction and demolition permits run through Madison County, and we handle that filing as part of the job. Driveways onto town-maintained streets go through the town Street and Sewage crew under Public Works, with no published form, so it starts with a phone call we make early. County roads at the town edge belong to the Madison County Highway Department, and any approach or work touching a state route needs an INDOT right-of-way check. Septic permits go through the Madison County Health Department. If your project sits near the National Register-listed Thawley House, we screen for historic-resource questions before committing a schedule.

Summitville FAQs
Who issues building permits in Summitville?+
Madison County does. Summitville has no town building or demolition permit office, so the county planning office handles construction permits for parcels in town, same as for the unincorporated ground around it. That actually simplifies things: one county office, a process we run constantly for other Madison County jobs, and no town-versus-county confusion to untangle. We file it and track it.
What is the process for a new driveway?+
It depends on who owns the road you are pulling onto. Town-maintained streets go through the Summitville Street and Sewage crew under Public Works, which has no published form, so we call them directly. County roads at the edge of town go through the Madison County Highway Department's cut process. A state route approach is INDOT's jurisdiction. We figure out the owner first, because the right permit from the wrong office is still the wrong permit.
Does the elevation actually help my drainage?+
It helps, and it is not the whole story. Being the local summit means water generally wants to leave town, which beats the alternative. But Mud Creek's headwaters rise just west of town, and low corners of otherwise high parcels can still pond. We shoot actual grades and check the official flood maps rather than trusting the town's name to do the engineering.
Can you replace an old septic system here?+
Yes, and we do it regularly in towns this size. The permit runs through the Madison County Health Department, which reviews the soil and the design before anything is installed. If the existing system predates modern standards, expect the replacement to look different than what came out: sizing and placement rules have tightened. We handle the application, the dig, and the inspection schedule so the system goes in once and goes in right.
