Sloppy digs cost the whole project time and concrete money — over-dug footers pour deep and expensive.

The backfill matters as much as the dig
Cracked basement and crawlspace walls are usually a backfill story: heavy wet clay dumped against green concrete in one push. We backfill in lifts after walls are cured and braced or the framing load is on, use stone where the spec calls for drainage backfill, and finish with positive grade away from the structure — the cheapest waterproofing there is.
