The first earthmovers here worked 2,000 years ago
Mounds State Park near Anderson protects ten ceremonial earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell people around 160 BCE. The Great Mound is roughly 390 feet across with a 9-foot embankment — hand-built earthwork that's still holding its grade after two millennia. We respect anybody who moves that much dirt without a John Deere.
Anderson burned its gas day and night — literally
When natural gas was struck in 1887, Anderson became the "Queen City of the Gas Belt," and towns lit gas flambeaux that burned around the clock to show off. The gas ran out by 1912. The factories it built aged into today's demolition stock — and boom-era underground lines still turn up when you dig in the older parts of town.
Four waterways, one drainage puzzle
The White River, Fall Creek, Pipe Creek, and Lick Creek all drain Madison County in different directions. That dense network means site grading here has to be deliberate — water that isn't given a path will find its own, usually through your crawlspace.
In 1820 this county was solid forest
Settlers found Madison County completely wooded — white oak, poplar, walnut, sycamore. Every farm and every town lot was cleared by hand and by fire. Land clearing is the county's founding trade, and it's still where most of our building-site jobs begin.
