Excavation & Demolition in Kokomo, Indiana
Kokomo is the Howard County seat, about 40 minutes from the Arcadia shop straight up US 31. The 2020 census counted 59,604 people across nearly 30,000 housing units, up sharply from 2010 as the city grew and annexed. This is a manufacturing city with a gas-boom past, which from an excavation standpoint means older industrial parcels alongside a housing stock where about one unit in nine sat vacant at the 2020 count. We bring the same crew and the same honest grade to all of it.
Roughly 40 minutes from the shop, straight up US 31.
What we do in Kokomo

Know your town
The history under Kokomo and why it matters when we dig.
Named for Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo
The city takes its name from the Miami man Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo, and the historical record argues with itself about what the name means, including one tradition that translates a related Miami name as 'the diver.' The settlement grew up around Wildcat Creek and became the county seat, and the creek is still the organizing fact of local ground: where it runs, where it floods, and where the water in your yard is ultimately trying to go.
Gas boom to City of Firsts
The railroad arrived in 1854, natural gas set off a boom in the 1880s, and the cheap energy pulled in the automobile industry that earned Kokomo its City of Firsts reputation. Manufacturing is still a major employer. For us the legacy is in the ground: a century of industrial use can leave old foundations, buried utilities, and fill that do not show from the surface. We probe older ground before pricing it, and environmental status on a former industrial parcel is its own review.
Wildcat Creek runs through it
Wildcat Creek is the city's defining waterway, and creek-adjacent projects get floodplain screening against the official maps before design work starts. Kokomo also runs its own MS4 stormwater program, so ground disturbance inside the city gets local review on top of the state rules. That is not red tape to fight; it is a checklist we already know, and projects that respect the water move faster than projects that ignore it.
Kokomo Permits
Who issues what inside Kokomo limits, and when the county takes over.
Kokomo is the most fully permitted city we serve to the north, and the upside is that the offices are real and the answers are published. Building and demolition permits go through Kokomo Inspection Services. Street cuts and drive approaches on city streets go through Engineering & Traffic, and the city runs its own MS4 stormwater program, so ground disturbance gets city review in addition to the state construction stormwater rules that start at an acre. Septic applies outside city sewer service and runs through the Howard County Health Department. US 31, US 35, SR 22, and SR 26 all serve the city, and an approach onto any of them is INDOT jurisdiction rather than the city's. We map which office owns each piece of your project before the schedule is set.

Kokomo FAQs
Do you really work as far north as Kokomo?+
Yes. The shop in Arcadia is about 40 minutes away down US 31, and we schedule Kokomo work alongside our other Howard County jobs so mobilization stays efficient. You get a Hamilton County contractor's pricing discipline without paying for a long haul, because the haul is not long. For multi-day projects the equipment stays on site, so travel time touches the schedule exactly once in each direction.
What does the city MS4 stormwater program mean for my project?+
It means Kokomo reviews how your project handles runoff, not just whether the state does. Ground disturbance in the city gets local stormwater review, and disturbing an acre or more adds the state construction stormwater permit on top. In practice: erosion control goes in before dirt moves, and the paperwork is filed before the inspector asks. We handle those filings as part of the job.
I am buying an older industrial property. What should I be thinking about?+
Two separate things. First, the physical ground: a century of manufacturing can leave old foundations, slabs, buried utilities, and undocumented fill, so we probe before quoting excavation on legacy parcels. Second, the environmental file: contamination status is a records-and-testing question that runs separately from excavation, and it is worth resolving before you commit to a site plan. We handle the first directly and will not pretend the second away.
Who permits a new driveway in Kokomo?+
Inside the city, drive approaches and street cuts go through Kokomo Engineering & Traffic. If your frontage is on US 31, US 35, SR 22, or SR 26, the approach is INDOT's call, not the city's. On county roads outside the city line, the Howard County Highway Department owns the process. The permit has to come from whoever owns the road, and figuring that out is the first thing we do.
